Drycleaner Site Profiles

Royal Cleaners, Clarksville, Tennessee

Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

A former drycleaning facility in Clarksville, TN approximatley 4140 sq.ft. and located in a commercially zoned area was found to have soils contaminated with the historic release of drycleaning solvent perchloroethylene.

Remediation Status: In groundwater monitoring

Contaminants present and the highest amount detected in both soil and groundwater.

Remediation Scenario

Cleanup Goals:
To achieve drinking water standards with an interim goal of plume contraction.

  Full Scale Remedy

In Situ Chemical Oxidation

Why the technology was selected:
Direct injections using 40% Sodium Permanganate was selected because it will oxidize these particular concentrations of chlorinated ethenes and is effective in both saturated and unsaturated soil.

Date implemented:
9/6/2006-Initial permanganate injection event (TVG Environmental) 8/14/2007-Follow up permanganate injection (I.E.T.)

Final remediation design:
Four direct injections of 55 gallons of 40% sodium permanganate solution were injected into the permanant injection points screened from 2-12'bgs

Other technologies used:
Three injection events were completed from 9/06 to 11/06. Oxidation via Sodium Permanganate was the technology chosen. An additional injection event was completed in 8/07.

Results to date:
In MW-1 an original sample yielded 226.2 ppb Total CVOC's in 2000, by 2/08 those concentrations have decreased to 42.4. Since the most recent injection event in 8/07 a decrease from 181.6ppb has been observed. In BR-1 total CVOC's have decreased from 35.3 ppb in 2000 to 3.5ppb in 2/08 In BR-2 total CVOC's have decreased from 52.2 ppb to undetected in 2/08.
